I've been having some issues this year with our 35 SC. It has 300 hours on the 300hp Volvo Penta's. Early this year I had a problem getting on plane with just the wife and I. I also noticed a little vibration. When I got back to the dock I got in the water and checked the props. The inward prop on the starboard side definitely had a bend in it. The other 3 I could not really tell. I scheduled a haulout with my local Regal shop and had it pulled. I wanted them to service the outdrives while it was out. Well, they informed me that both bellows had small holes and the outdrives needed rebuilt. I went over and they showed me the small holes so I had them rebuild them both. During the rebuild, they informed me the trim sensors were also bad, so we had those replaced. While it was out of the water and all 4 props needed "true'd" I discussed the possibility of changing the prop pitch in order to get on plane better. I don't know if others have this issue, but with the design of the 35 SC seating, everyone tends to sit back of center. In addition, both fuel tanks are in the same location. Getting on plane with more than 4 people is a struggle at best. They discussed and talked to the prop shop and decided to change the pitch one number (I believe we went 20 to 19, but I'm not positive). Back out on the water to test and the starboard engine would only run about 3600 RPM's and it threw and alarm. Back to the marina and ran the codes and discovered a bad knock sensor on the starboard. Four hours later out for another test ride. The port engine would run about 4600 rpm (down 100-200 I assumed due to new prop pitch). The starboard would only get to about 4200-4300. The mechanic suggested new plugs, wires and distributor caps since I was at 300 hours. I haven't made these changes yet, but I am hoping for a couple of inputs from the forum. 1) Does this sound like a good starting place for the starboard engine having lower rpm? and 2) has anyone made any performance changes to increase hp or improve performance for the planing issue? I see where you can buy ECU upload improvements and kinds of things to milk another 25-30 hp out of the little Volvo's. I appreciate any info.

I don’t know a lot bout the 35 Regal, but I’m thinking you must have outdrives. Having a total of 300 hours on a set of boat engines is a few years normally and since boat engines run at higher RPMs, new Plugs and Wires clearly won’t hurt. I had Volvos on my 322 Monterey and I was pretty sure they were duo Prop setups. My guess is since you mentioned 4 props you probably have a DuoProp setup as well, but you didn’t share the model of outdrive our the specific Duo Props setup. Also there was no mention on any service or how old the plugs and wires or even the Oil is in the engines or the last time the outdrives were serviced. Can you provide more info there.

It does have outdrives and they are Volvo Penta as well. I'm not sure off the top of my head the exact VP model. I'm the 3rd owner. The first owner had it for 5 years, the 2nd for one and I have had it for 4. I had the oil changed in the outdrives about 3 years ago. I'm not sure when the last full service was. Yes, I was implying that it was duo props, and that is true. I'm not familiar with what you meant about duo prop setup? I assume the plugs and wires are original. I change the oil annually. This year I changed the water separators. Impellers are due and will change next spring.

I think it would be good to get the plugs and wires changed on the engines and to be honest might be good to simply get the outdrives serviced. I had them serviced, pulled and greased (coupler to engine) annually at my marina when I had the 322 Monterey. I had the Aluminum DPS model, not the Ocean X drives which i think are composite. That boat was 12 years ago so I’m going on memory here. If you haven’t had anyone service the drives or change the oil the drives themselves in 3 year as you noted, may be worth doing that.

My comment was that they had not been serviced for 3 years, prior to this July. The outdrives are fresh as of July 2024.. Both were totally rebuilt.
