Steering Malfunction Alarm '14 Regal SC 35

I have a '14 Regal SC 35 with twin Volvo D3 engines and outdrives.  One day went to take the boat out for a cruise (last usage was just 2 weeks prior) and upon using the FOB the Port side Ignition light came on but starboard was off.  I manually pressed the Ignition and it alarmed "steering malfunction, check Op Manual". All the manual says is steering lost communication with helm, contact Volvo tech.    So now I'm waiting for a damn mobile tech window slot but it is estimated at 3 weeks out!  Wondering if anyone knows what to look at like where in the helm would be the connection?  I'd like to swap the comms between port and starboard to see if the alarm follows or not.
