gofast,
Yes pushing the bow down a bit to cushion the ride in rougher seas (at a slower rpm) does improve the ride and reduce the slamming you tend to get running at a normal cruising angle. With my 4460 and maybe it was just mine, or the way that she was typically loaded, when people moved around and unbalanced the boat, the port side or Starboard side would be out of balance, one higher than the other. Clearly it's uncomfortable running this way. With auto tabs the tabs are automatically adjusted to put the boat even again. Otherwise you would need to move the tabs yourself to that. Also, I've tested coming up on plane on my 4460 (which had IPS 500s) with the tabs down and with them all the way up and to be honest the tabs down approach does get the boat on plane faster. Not much faster but probably a second or two faster. That saves fuel. Also running with tabs down somewhat does help the boat stay on plane at lower speeds. Which can also improve fuel efficiency.

Thank you guys, you are a great resource as I continue to work my way through my 'new to me 4460'. I have spent the past two winters crawling through the boat, taking stuff apart and replacing pumps, engine batteries, cockpit fridge/ice maker (the same U-line model is still available, so easy refit), installing LED bulbs in lights...need to find a lens for the first one which I dropped!! Any idea who made the OEM salon puck lights? My boat is either a late 2005 or early 2006 as it has TAMD75 Volvo Penta diesels and ZF gear box with shafts. FYI, I intentionally avoided the early edition IPS Pods...afraid of maintenance issues. My boat has a bow thruster so easy to maneuver in the marina.
Today I am working on replacing the Force 10 built-in propane grill with the Kenyon Electric grill which Tom installed. I also plan to install the Bennett trim tab upgrade. Did you have any trouble 'snaking' the wiring to the helm switch?
The ice is gone from our harbour, the 4-6 inches of snow forecast last night did not happen, and the weather for the next week is above freezing. Hopefully we will beat the virus and get to go boating again in a couple of months. Our season here runs from aprox. June 1st to the end of Sept., so I envy you guys from the Chesapeake and Georgia.
All the best, David

GoldenArch,
No snaking of wires needed if I remember right. The unit that installs at the helm is the computer and leveler unit. It connects to the old switch and you have to install a new switch next to it or somewhere else at the helm if you don't have room by the old switch. . At the back its basically a piggy back install and I think the computer up front talks to the piggy back unit at the back through the existing switch to pump wires. That's the way the old unit worked, but the new unit looks like it comes with a full replacement switch for the switch up front. So the wiring is probably different. Either way, I doubt it's a tough install and if you already have Bennet tabs you can probably reuse some of that wiring or perhaps worst case leverage that wiring to. help you snake new wiring.

Congratulations on the new boat David, I have the same model and year boat as you. The compressor for air horns is mounted on starboard side in the storage next to ice maker/refrigerator. I had some leaks just fixed but they were shaft seals and also replaced cutlass bearings while they had shafts disconnected. I don’t know how many hours you have but just had entire raw water cooling components replaced on both engines last season at 525 hours. This year I just found the the rear swim step to swim platform has completely rooted out is being re-cored. The underside of engine hatch is also very wet and will have to be replaced next season. I’m adding these things so that you and others can be on the lookout. We love the boat and I hope you enjoy yours. 2007 4460. My compressor for air horns is also on starboard side in the cabinet to the left of the ice maker/refrigerator. Mine has the cockpit AC unit in the cabinet the compressor is mounted on th back of the cabinet.

I could hear the air compressor running but no sound coming from the horn. Took the horn apart and the diaphragm was dirty and quite a bit of water in there. Also the air hose near the horn was a bit rotted and ripped. Cleaned it up, wiped it down, snipped off a bit of the hose where it was ripped, reinstalled and back in business. Point of the post is to be sure to check the horn as well as the compressor. My compressor was running but no sound coming out of the horn.

Hey guys, An update on my 'new to me 4460', now 2 years mine. 1. Just installed the Kenyon electric BBQ per Tom's recommendation. Looks like a built-in Regal factory installation. 2. Finally muscled the new house battery into the battery box (between engine, fuel tank, hot water heater, under port engine exhaust). 3. Installed new switch covers for switch panel next to pilot seat by newmarine.com. Discovered switches on panel are so close that the new back lit switches do not fit as they are just a tad wider! Ended up installing every second switch cover. 4. delayed installation of Bennett Electronic Control Kit to next year. Boat goes in Tuesday. 5. Air horn is dual ELECTRIC...no compressor that you have tried to help me locate!! 6. Sent both tachs back to Faria for 'overhaul', as they were sticking and wandering. Will let you know if they are fixed. ($125/tach). Stay safe, wash your hands. David
