I found a used-fairly new Regal boat with bottom paint. I've been told it is a hybrid hard ablative paint. See the attached picture. I am not thrilled with a bottom paint boat since I intend to keep the boat in dry storage at a marina. Also, I learned that once painted, the die is cast, and regular re-applies are necessary. I would like to hear if the die is really cast. Is there a fix such as removing the paint, and once removed, what is the necessary to get the bottom back to like-new?

Lets start out with what model/year, where you are docked/located, salt or fresh water, hours on engine , if wet docked since new, etc. From your pictures you definitely need both a bottom cleaning and continue using bottom paint, whether ablative or not. After bottom pressure washed/cleaned let a expert determine if you need re application and what type needed based on what is currently applied. Attached are two pictures of our 2001 4160, 900 hours continuously wet docked since new in 2001 on Lake Lanier GA. The original bottom paint is pristeen, never had cleaned or re painted. Attachments:

Hi gofast24, 1. The used boat is a 2019 Regal 26 XO 2. It is kept out of the water located in Illinois 3. Fresh water 4. Approximately 50 hours on the engine
Your boat bottom looks good. Thank you for the pictures.
I will be using the boat in Southwest Florida in saltwater...Gulf to the Keys
From your account, it sounds like the bottom paint can not be removed...there is no fix. Correct?

I thought I read something somewhere that you could re-gel/restore a hull after removing bottom paint but I think it’s super expensive.

Hi rlazar, if it can be fixed by removing the paint and re-gel, that would be great. However, I don't think the owner selling the boat would agree to spend the money. I wouldn't blame him.

Correct? Thanks for the detailed info and Your welcome for the pictures. Bottom Doesn't look good with only 50 hours on a 2019 boat , the bottom is in need of cleaning as shown in your pictures! I have a rough idea that the original owner was advised to get bottom paint when he bought it based on the lake/river it would be kept om/in? I dont believe I mentioned the bottom paint can not be removed? If I was you , just have the bottom pressure cleaned before storing it dry over winter, take a couple of pictures after pressure washing and talk with a professional about removing or re painting bottom. My oldest son (50, has a 38 Sea Ray on Percy Priest lake outside of nashville. All the folks on that lake wet year round need bottoms pressure washed at least once a year, some twice! Nasty water they are on (like Yoda would say).

Thank you all for your comments. I've decided to walk away from the deal despite the owner offering to clean, use acetone, and repaint the bottom with a hard epoxy paint. I also have to think about resale. So, I'll keep looking for a weekender boat.

That 2019 model year vessel with only 50 hours on engines most likely still under factory warranty? Well, good that you posted you questions before committing to purchasing it. Question, the dry dock pictures were taken by you or current owner? Looks like snow on the ground so most likely current owner has had it pulled for winter and on blocks so no trailer?

I don't blame you for walking away--especially if you do not intend to keep the boat wet slipped. I would be concerned that bottom paint on a 26' boat will always be a mark against it for resale.

Correct about the snow location...actually outside of Chicago. Glad that I received some good comments that convinced me to continue my search. Actually I'm pricing out a new build 26 XO between two dealers. It will be exciting since I'll be able to visit Regal in Orlando to see the boat at a specific manufacturing stage.

If all goes well, when do you plan on making it to the factory? I’ve done the tour twice. The 2nd time was much better than the first as the person who took us around was super knowledgeable about the build process.

My thoughts on Bottom Paint= I dont believe bottom paint is a mark against any boat, regardless of how old it is, size, where docked (wet or dry) etc. To me the original owner had the insight (or was recommended) to have this important protective measure done due to location/wet or dry docked/condition of the water boat will be used/stored in/or on. The condition of our 2001 originally bottom painted 4160 being wet in the lake for 19 years is a testament to the positive effect of bottom paint regardless of where you are. PS: Still not sure why OP walked away from it, cant believe the fact that it was bottom painted was the reason? OP, if I may ask, what was the asking price and what kind of numbers are you getting on a brand new equivalent? . Thanks

Hearing from the owner to clean and repaint the boat that I intend to keep in dry storage in Southwest Florida was enough to convince me to walk away, on top of other factors. The asking price for the 2019 boat w/o generator was $105K. A new 2020 is quoted at $135K with discounts and all the desired options, including a generator. Thank you for your comments.

Thank you for your comments. tomj, thanks for the reply. Yes, the difference in price is worth buying a brand new vessel! Assume the price includes a trailer? My middle son (39) ran into the same problem with a new 24' tri toon pontoon boat (150 HP Honda on it, full canvas, trailering cover, etc.) . New boats (with trailer) were only about 10% more than a one or two year old one without trailer! Interesting how the new/used boating market works? Attached is what he bought and the equipment/price FYI

Looks like the attachment won't open? It's just a pdf file! When I try to open it it sends me to my desktop to save it? Thought it would just open? Anyway, I tried . I just checked it and it is a real pdf file on my PC? Dont know why it wont open in the ROF post? Also, if "replying to a post" there is no place to attach (or "re attach") anything?
