I have to admit, Volvo did it right in every aspect with the gen5 engine. Reliability, fuel economy, easy of maintenance, easy drain system, weigh savings and that’s just to name a few. The only thing I always watch for is idling for more than 10 minutes, I have always ended up with an engine code as a result of a fouled plug whenever the engine left to idle for a while.
For those of you with new gen5 engines, what your experience?

My experience so far has been great. Our new 33 express with twin 5.3 gen 5 300 engines jumps onto plane. Fuel economy so far is ellar, we are averaging 9.25 gph . Our 28 express with a single 380 averaged around 8gph. The cruising sweet spot seems to be around 4K rpms. The EVC, glass cockpit, and joyick are amazing.
I’m very impressed so far.

Is that 9.25 gph per engine or combined? I'm looking at moving up to a 33 express and am trying to decide between the Volvo I/Os or Yamaha outboards.

My thoughts= "GPH Averaging" should be more specific like "at 20 MPH" and consider going from a 28' Vessel (single engine?) to a 33' Vessel with twin engines will have a great impact on MPG ? As long as you are happy with the new Gen 5's that is the most important item, regardless of speed or size of vessel. Congratulations on the new boat! keep us posted on your experience!
PS: New Yamaha outboards would be fantastic. A dock mate just bought a second boat with 4X 400 HP Merc outboards. Forgot the name of the boat but will do 80 MPH with 8 people aboard! I will try to find out the make/model of the boat and post a picture of it.

Around 50 hrs in and we are averaging 9 gph. At 26-29 mph cruise we are using 19-20 gph and 1.3-1.4 mph. This is at 3800-4100 rpm. The swim platform is too important to us to ever do outboards but I’m in fresh water.
