I have just bought a 2000ES with a Volvo 200SX. First boat ever ad absolutely delighted with her. I have a few question if anybody has experience with them: 1. Do I need to drain and flush the engine after each trip. She is in salt water but on a dry stack. 2. The speedo is intermittent. Do I take the dash off from the front, loose connection? 3. Very keen for a wakeboard rack. Living in the UK they are hard to get. Any alternative makes. 4. There is a bung below the fuel tank in the bilge. Seems strange to have it there. Is it meant to always be in? Any advice would be gratefully received.

Congrats! I have this boat in a 2019 model year and its great. Is your engine the "closed cooling" model? I believe it would have been in 2017 but am unsure if the UK market got different engines. Regardless, I would flush using the flush port since it is so easy on the Volvo engine. If you have the closed cooling model it might be less important.
Do you have any debris in your speedometer pickup on the drive? You may want to probe the hole with a paper clip.
I would leave the bung in place unless you notice water in the fuel tank compartment, then I would drain it so it will get pumped out with the bilge pump.

Thank you. Where is the speedo pick up? It is Gen 5 engine with closed loop cooling. I pulled the drain tonight and then flushed with a hose onto the engine water connector.

The speedo pick up is on the leading edge of the back of the sterndrive. It is a small hole that is susceptible to getting clogged with debris. My understanding is that water enters this hold and travels through a tube to the back of the speedo and the pressure causes the gauge to work. If there is a bubble in line due to debris is might cause it not to work right. If the connection to the hose was loose behind the dash you would probably get water trickling out on your feet!

First take about a 6"-12" piece of straight wire. A small wire coat hanger worked for me. Gently push into and out of the hole on the leading edge of the outdrive. Then see if that works. if not take the air line off the back of the speedometer at the dash. Used a portable compressed air tank to gently blow the line clean. Usually you can see air bubbles coming out of the hole(mentioned above by Matt19) on the leading edge of the stren drive lower unit if it is in the water. A two person job. It should work then.
