10 miles out an alarm started sounding from the dash - steady high pitched beep. All gauges normal - temp and oil pressure ok. Happened at 3300 rpm. Reduced to 3000 rpm and alarm went off. Back on if increased again over 3000. All fluids were topped and full prior to departure. Upon return, port engine coolant was low but not empty. Again, temp gauge read normal the whole time. Would low coolant cause the alarm at only over 3000 rpm? Maybe temp gauge at helm is wrong and we were actually overheating. Any ideas?

I would rely more on the switches (coolant temp and oil pressure) than the gauges (Faria?). In any case check you engine coolant overflow bottles again cold)(like in a car), sea water pump for flow and impeller condition(when was the last time / hours that you checked/replaced the impellers) , if all OK, Get a marine service tech to check out before you cook your engine! Also, assuming you have fresh water cooled engines check the sea strainer that pulls water from the lake/ocean to the pump to the heat exchanger. The fact that your alarm stopped when you throttled back to 3000 RPM indicates a partially plugged sea strainer or some impeller blades already broken off and both causing low sea water flow. Let us know what you find out!
