We bought the boat this year and the combo ice maker/refrigerator in the cockpit doesn’t work. We don’t need the ice marker so we want to just put in a refrigerator. The space is 30”:high x 21” wide x 22” deep. Does anyone have a suggestion for a reliable replacement. We have looked at Nova Kool R3800, Isotherm, Dometic, Norcold but customer reviews range from 1 to 5 so some concern about quality and longevity. here’s what’s in the boat now

Does the unit power and run the compressor and just not cool or is it totally DOA? Reason I ask is that I have the same fridge on my 3560 and it stopped cooling last year. I added refrigerant (134-a) and it's been good since. You just need to buy a pinch valve, some 134a and a cheap set of gauges to charge the system. Cost me about $25 bucks.

The ice maker works as a freezer so I’ve been letting the ice maker try to keep the rest of the refrigerator a little cool, but the refrigerator section doesn’t cool.

That's interesting....so the compressor is working and there would have to be refrigerant in the system if the freezer section is working. I am by no means an expert at refrigeration systems, but I did a fair bit of reading when I was messing with mine. If you're inclined, you might want to pull it out and check that the coils are not overly dirty and check that the evaporator fan motor is working. That could account for the ice maker working and not the fridge.

I replaced the original cockpit U-line ice maker-refrigerator in my 06 4460 last year with the same model noted and am disappointed with the new model. The ice maker is not working after one year, and the refrigerator function will not cool to 39F. I have owned u-line products in the past which have lasted for 15 years on my previous boat...quality not as good as the old U-line!

hawker63, When I got my 2006 4460 back in 2013 it didn't have the ice maker in this slot at all, it simply had a dorm room small fridge in there wobbling around. I ended up replacing it with a Isotherm and custom built a frame to secure it and used a little aluminum trim to make it look nice. It wasn't a hard job. This is a picture of the results below. I can't find the original model out on Defender.com but this one is something like it. www.defender.com/product.jsp?id=4078324

Not a HVACR expert either but our 2001 4160 has a combo fridge/freezer in salon and a dedicated ice maker on bridge deck. Only problem to date was the module that allows fridge/freezer to run on either AC or DC. Pulled board from back of unit, replaced, and everything still fine! Might check a service manual on your combo and see if a separate evaporator coil on both fridge/freezer or a fan that blows cold air from freezer to fridge side of unit on call to cool fridge? This happened to my house fridge some yars ago, just a fan, fixed and still running fine 14 years later.

We were able to resolve the problem. Just to refresh, Ice maker worked, but refrigerator didn’t get cold. Turns out that while the fan was turning, it was drawing 0.8 amps vs nameplate of .26 so it wasn’t turning fast enough to cool the refrigerant. Tech Replaced fan motor, $200 and fridge works great.
