When Isaias went through the Southern Jersey Shore area today, it created havoc in several areas. One of them was the marina my 33 OBX is in, Bridgeport Family Marina in West Wildwood. When I picked this marina it was more that there was an available slip that would fit the 33, but when I got there I felt it was pretty well protected being on this little back bay that was no more than 300 yards across. Well when Isaias came north today, it was blasting the marina with South Easterly winds when I got there. While my boat made it through this unscathed, it was probably due to me being there as I ended up adding 3 extra lines to the Carver Aft Cabin that was downwind from my boat with nothing but the lines keeping it from blowing and rocking into my boat with the wind and swells. Several other boats ended up with some fiberglass damage, along with torn canvass and bent bimini and flag poles.
While I was adding lines and helping move fenders and such, one dock over a boat on the T-Head started taking on enough water with the 3 footers smashing against it's stern that it sunk. Same thing happened to a center console one marina over. During the efforts to add extra lines to some other folks boats to protect boats next to them, the wind changed as forecasted to come from the south westerly direction and when that happened, suddenly there were 4 to 5 foot swells crashing into the marina and battering all the boats.
I ended up helping out the Marina owner, his son and a few other boaters run around and fix broken lines, move fenders and even deal with several pilings breaking. When the wind died down however, we went to work in an effort to raise the boat that sunk in our marina. Interesting event with Air Bladders, come alongs, and Chain lifts, compressors and one very big diesel pump.
While we were successful at getting this one back floating. Unfortunately, I have a feeling the insurance company will probably end up totaling it.
