Lookup the manual from westerbeke’s site. They are extensive but the symptoms you describe is either due to sitting for a long time or recent fuel filter changes. 2) report back and we’ll go to step 3....

Dont think gas set need bleeding other than after changing fuel filter, then just need to turn set to on (not start) for a few minutes and let electric fuel pump prime and self bleed system . Could be many other things if it starts then backfires= ignition module, water in fuel, out of fuel from tank, if carbureted stale gummed up carb bowl, etc.

It should be bled after layup or fuel filter work (there are 3 fuel filters on that 3.5kw model). Could be other things like you said, but the backfire on those EFI gensets is the telltale that it could be fuel related.

Yes, if gas propulsion engines would be gas gen set, sorry! 3.5 kW EFI and 3X fuel filters? OP should be happy he doesn't have a Kohler? Just curious, how do you bleed a EFI engine? I am very familiar with bleeding a diesel but no experience bleeding a EFI engine, other than our 8.1 GSiI-A VP's are EFI and when ran out of gas just filled up tank, turned ignition switch to on (not start) and waited for about 30 seconds then hearing electric fuel pump stop cranked engine and started in about 5 seconds? Same thing when replacing (or removing to pour contents into glass jar to see if water in fuel) fuel filter/water separators, starts in about 10 seconds even with fuel filter empty?

Have to wonder what a new Westerbeke 7.0 kW gas gen set costs/wholesale or retail? Our 20 year old Westerbeke 7.0 kW with approx. 1000 hours starting and running like a sewing machine, doing all maintenance over the 6 years of owning vessel!

Requires a fuel pressure gauge and uses the ford adaptor that autozone carries.

Thanks guys, I let the boat sit overnight reset everything and the gen started right up.

Thanks guys, I let the boat sit overnight reset everything and the gen started right up. Thanks for advising the corrective action you did and allowed gen set to start! Also, omarf4, thanks for advice on 3X schrader valves assuming there to check fuel pressure on this new (to me) westerbeke set). Glad to see Kohler puling out of gas gen set market (wonder why?)! Also, have to wonder what price of new 3.5 kW Westerbeke compares to problematic Kohler equivalent set? OP, how many hours on propulsion engine and gen set?

Last few years before retiring was involved in selling/ commissioning 500 kW to 3 MW gas (gaseous fueled, not gasoline) gen sets. sets ran on NG, coal mine methane, sewage gas from digestors, etc. These sets didnt need bleeding but fairly expensive ECM indicating all faults, output, kW hours, fuel consumption, oil change intervals, etc. at set or via internet connection from remote connection to set. Yes, I am getting a little off track here, sorry!
