I have a 2001 4160 with twin Volvo TAMD 74EDC turbo diesels. Recently when cruising I have noticed the rpm drop on the port engine, then come back to its original level several times during a short (less than 1 hour) cruise.
As always, any ideas are appreciated.

Do you sense that the actual RPM is dropping on the engine, or are you simply saying this due to the RPM gauge bouncing. Gauges going bad is normal stuff to deal with but if you sense the motor losing power and then coming back with no other inputs, it's probably more serious. Could be fuel flow, or turbo issues. not sure of the specific configuration of those engines, since I had D6s in my 4460.

I can hear the pitch of the engine change when the rpm drops. Others have suggested fuel filter issue or possibly something on the prop.

Diesels are pretty simple, fuel and air. I would start with fuel filters.

Diesels are pretty simple, fuel and air. I would start with fuel filters. With two fuel tanks (one feeding each engine try switching 3 way valve from one tank to the other engine if you have that capability. with the intermittent loss of power (RPM at helm gauge) problem sounds like water in fuel, check your fuel filter / water separators to see if water in either fuel system. What type fuel filter / water separators do you have. Is there a water in fuel alarm on your filters? Water in fuel on a diesel is the worse thing for a diesel besides intermittent loss of power!! The loss of power/rpm is trying to tell you something, get it figured out. After that check and no water in system pull injectors out and have them tested on a bosch injector test stand, could be a sticking injector needle, plugged injector tip, or spring damaged by water in fuel. Good luck. You might need to get a good diesel mechanic to do the aforementioned checks if you not that handy.
