I’m going to tackle some of my end of season tasks this year, and I’ve never had a boat or other vehicle with a cartridge oil filter before. When replacing standard oil filters, I always would fill them with oil before spinning them on. Should I be filling the cartridge housing with oil before sliding the new cartridge back into the housing? I’m envisioning that the cartridge will displace the oil, either into the bilge or onto my pant leg. Appreciate any guidance from those of you who know!

I’ve never prefilled an oil filter. Many trucks, cars, boats, several hundred thousand miles ( maybe a million), thousands of hours, never had an internal engine issue. If you do prefill a filter, make sure it is filled on the input side of the filter so you aren’t sending unfiltered oil to your engine. Many engines have been destroyed this way.

Put filer cartridge in housing first, then fill it with oil slowly, then re attach housing with filter cartridge in it back onto filter housing (the thru mounting bolt may leak some oil out, just do it fast and a rag under housing) . I always pre fill my spin on filters with engine oil before attaching, save the engine from being with out oil flow/pressure for 5/10 seconds when re starting.
