A few weeks ago Hurricane Isaias past through and dropped a large tree on my 1998 Regal 242. I managed to jack up the tree and pull the trailer forward. I didn’t have insurance on the boat and my homeowners insurance won’t cover the damage. There’s a lot of damage to the fiberglass, windshield and more. The boat has low hours and was in great condition before the tree hit it. I’m looking for someone to give me an estimate to do these extensive repairs. I value the boat at about 16,000. Can anyone recommend a good repair facility that could take a job like this. I called a few dealers and haven’t had any luck. I live in northern NJ near Greenwood Lake. Thanks

I had an accident with my 96 Bryant two years ago and had it repaired by Young's Fiberglass in Mamora NJ. They are just off the Garden State Parkway, on Route 9 down near Ocean City. I can tell you that Fiberglass repair isn't cheap. In my case the fix was covered by my boating insurance. But you'll see the damage below and the overall repair. Youngs did an awesome job, even matching the custom paint my son and I had applied about 6 years previous. I would recommend them as they do quality work and I have experience with them. However, what I get worried about with your damage is finding parts you need such as your windshield. Those types of things could rack up the charges outside of just getting the fiberglass fixed. Just to give you an idea, this fix was about 8k which included a complete new rub rail which probably added about 1k to that overall cost. Youngs did all of the work, so labor costs were a big part of that. I was able to get progressive to cover it since I had a 16k value on the boat and it was covered for damages up to 16k no matter what. Attachments:

I had some glass repairs done to my Crownline LS240. Deep gauges in the side as I lost a bumper and the boat was damaged by a nail sticking out from a dock at a restaurant. I had it fixed at Lighthouse harbor marine in Greentown Pa. work was excellent but as noted above it wasn’t cheap.

No insurance? Assume you owned the boat outright and no loan so the insurance wasn't required? Dont have any suggestions as to where to get it repaired in your area but maybe thing about insurance in the future? Yes, homeowners insurance doesn't cover boats or cars, pretty typical unless you declare boat in home owners policy. Good luck with the repairs!

Skyline, Doesn't look like your hull was hit at all and most of the damage is above the rub rail. That should make it easier, but clearly there is a lot of damage on both sides of the topsides. Where you see cracks isn't the only damage as well, there are probably hairline cracks radiating out from the impact zones all through the top sides. Looks to me like the starboard side of the windshield plus all the fiberglass repairs will be the big cost items. I'm guessing this has to be more than 15k worth of damage. So you'll. have to weigh that investment in a boat that is 22 years old. You could send the pics to Young's and ask an opinion. Here is their website. youngsfiberglass.com

Tough to pay $15k plus for repair but if not repaired boat probably not worth much if trying to sell and most likely not able to use in the damaged condition? Wonder what the value of boat is on the used market when in good/serviceable condition? Without insurance your between a rock and hard spot. Good luck with what ever you decided to do. Maybe next boat get insurance?

I sent a message to Young’s in Marmora NJ. I’m waiting for a reply. I need an email to send some photos. It’s far from me, about 120 miles, but I would trailer boat to them if they think they could repair it. I would probably pay 15k if they could repair it. I charged batteries and everything electric is working and engine I’m sure will start. The drive needs maintenance, new rubber parts, etc. The drive was removed every year and boat was serviced every year by Marina until I took it home three years ago. The controls are fine boat has 440 hour on it. Hopefully I can work something out. If not I’ll sell it for parts.

Skyline, Youngs sometimes is faster if you call them directly. Do you have a phone number for them?

Would be a shame to part it out, amybe just bite the bullit and get it fixed? 440 hours on it isnt very much, but if on salt water maybe some other issues to deal with. Our 4160 is almost 20 years old (980 on engine hour meters) but on fresh water since new, great shape and a lot of maintenance/ minor repairs done on it, looks and runs like new ! Good luck in your endeavor to get it fixed and let us know results!

I decided my boat was too costly to repair, at least for me. I figure at least 10k to repair fiberglass. New windshield 1.5k, recent water damage 1k, new helm seat 1/2k, 3-5k for other needed repairs and maintenance. Then there's the unknown, when getting into the repair, not to mention the headaches I'll go through. The total of previously mentioned items is 16-18k plus any unknown items. Another big factor to consider is it's a 23 year old boat. I have the boat on Ebay with no RESERVE. the bidding at this time, 10/11/2020 is $2600, with 2 1/2 days left. I'm hoping to get 3k or better. Now were up to 19-23 plus. I can certainly replace the boat for that. It may be repairable for someone because fiberglass work is 90% labor but it is highly skilled and expensive.

Good luck with E-Bay, make sure winning bidder is approved for that much $. Bidders probably folks that are experienced in fiberglass repairs and will fix it themselves and re sell?

The boat sold for $2,900. I hated to see it go I really liked that boat. I took many 4 day weekend trips on that boat. The new owner asked if he could compression test the engine. I had no problem with that. All cylinders were between 160 and 175. We disconnected fuel line and put temporary line into a gas can, cranked for about 5 seconds and it started right up. We shifted drive forward and reverse. 50lbs oil pressure at idle and ran great. The new owner got great running engine, Bravo 3 drive and 8,000 GVW trailer in excellent condition for $2,900. There were also other valuable parts on the boat. He took the boat away and was very happy. I'm retiring next year and looking for a house with a dock and I hope to be buying another boat. Thanks to all for your help and ideas.
