Dear all, I bought a Regal Ventura 9.8 which I now need to change the Rudder Bearings. Unfortunately the fromer boat holder never changed the sealing so it has now two no longer repairable compl. rotten rudder bearings. The rudder itself could be removed easily but the bearing is a big issue. The bearing is consisitng of two parts: the upper bearing is good. So the issue is only about the lower bearing which logically should also be tight. Unfortunately due to the missed service and inspection from the former holder, these are no longer tight and in addition to make things worse the screws canot be loosened. Due to the space behind the engines, it is impossible to loosen the rusty screws with any large tools. Also the clamping nut for the re-adjustment of the seals (key-width 72mm) is unsolvable. The only way to solve the issue is to destroy it by sawing it open, which means a replacement part. I have already contacted several shipyards in Switzerland and even tried with Fröhlich Boats Center on the lake of constance as the are a regal dealer without any success. www.boote-center.de/ Would you be able to offer offer a suitable size or even better original spare part? In the attachment you can find some pictures of the current installation for your reference. It would be important that the inner diameter fits. The flange at the bottom of the hull should not be larger than 130 x 130mm. The waterline is higher than the bushing i.e. the seals should be designed for this. The entire lower rudder bearing now installed is approximately 180mm long. Thank you un advance foir getting back to me in this regard.

Bolts look like brass! Shouldn't have "rusted" , just some corrosion. Spray bolts with thread lubricant/penetrating oil and let set for a few days. Tou should be able to remove bolts vs. cutting out part of hull! Ya, looks really bad ! You dont indicate how old boat is and if in fresh/salt waters (Think lake Constance is fresh water) and if wet docked year around? Good luck!

if the nuts are really tight, a pneumatic nut splitter could help. As for the replacement part, you may need to get something else completely that is close to the size of the rudder and hull opening after you get that one out. I would think you'd find something that would work, but you'll probably have to do some work with the old bolt holes more than likely.

Could be simple or complex expensive repair? In either case you have to pull out vessel to dry dock so maybe try the penetrating oil for a few times / days first before splitting nuts off? Looks like Lake C water very corrosive! Also, how old is vessel and kept in water all year long or dry docked in winter?

I think your best bet at this point is to cut out the old rudder port and install a new one. You're going to want to be able to service the packing in future and you will be fighting those old crusty threads every time you service it.
You've got it far enough out no sense killing yourself getting the packing nut off. Just cut off the rudder port flange and start over.
