2005 26 commador Bravo 3 drive 350 mag mpi
Started with forward shift hesitation started to make some other odd noises.
So took a chance broke down drive and replaced the clone clutch only, verses a new or rebuilt drive for 4 to 7 thousand. I either did good or wasted 500 bucks.
Drive is back on boat and shifting right away but with a small klunk in both forward and reverse, never heard that before. Could it be cause the new clutch is grabbing so quickly. I know before with the worn clutch you would get a big klunk if you throtled up a bit before the clutch engaged. Before shifted very smooth. Only thing I changed was resetting the drive shaft bearing tension witch I pulled apart to replace the oil seal. I kept the same bearing shim
Got her up on plane no more weird noises.
All my fault for not changing gear oil enough. Adding a Simrek spray tower to drive did not know bravo's can reach 380 degs which is butal on the gear lube.
Love to hear your opinons Thank Joe

I had a 2004 Formula 27PC with twin 350 Mags and bravo IIIs, they always had a slight klunk going into gear. Same with my 1995 Mariah with the 7.4 bravo III setup I had before the Formula.
For whatever its worth.

I have a 2005 with 2 Bravo 3's.
I don't hear any clunk, but it's true that mine are not new.
My mechanic pulls the drives to check alignment, grease shafts, and inspect every other year.
The off years he doesn't, I drain a little oil from the screw on the right side to make sure the oil is not milky or off (water intrusion, etc.).
Thanks for the info on Bravo 3 temperatures and drive showers. I don't think I have seen this near me up north (Great Lakes).

I had a similar experience with my Bravo 3. When I bought the boat (used), it shifted butter-smooth in forward and reverse. After a period of about 2 years, I started getting a delayed shift going into gear. I took it in for service and they adjusted the shift cable. It helped for another year or so. When problem re-appeared it was much worse. It became a problem when loading the boat. Took it back to same dealer. This time it was $3,000 for complete repair. They offered to just replace the cone clutch but would not guarantee repair. After repair, it does have a small "clunk" when going into gear. Just a note - I service the outdrive every year that I have owned it with Mercury HiPo gear oil. I also remove the outdrive for winter storage. lubricate gimble bearing and check shaft alignment. I do not know if the outdrive was properly serviced prior to my ownership leading to the early failure.

Same story here. 2006 Formula 260ss with a 6.2 B3. Boat shifted beautifully until the 250 hour mark when the cone clutch needed replacement. After replacement, there was a noticeable clunk into gear. My mechanic explained that Merc tends to send the drives from the factory in a way that shifts very quietly but can put significant stress on the cone clutch. He called the small clunk a “ positive shift” that would last much longer. That boat is still serviced by my marina and as far as I know hasn’t had any drive issues since.
