I have a 2014 35SC. The early model 35SC's had a few design flaws (fixed in later models). One in particular was the sunroof motor. It seems that the belt has a tendency to slip free from the sled that holds the two ends of the belt together and opens and closes the roof. I had lots of problems with this in the early years, then realized that slightly longer screws would hold the assembly in place. That worked for 6 years, then this weekend, after a nasty wave bounced the boat pretty hard, the belt came loose again. This time, it seems that the threads inside the sled are stripped out. The way the sled block was designed, there was only about 1/4" or less of metal for the screw threads to grab onto. I disconnected the roof from the sled. It slides back about a foot, then runs into something.
Now, the sunroof switch only operates in the "open" position. When pushing "close", nothing happens, no sound out of the motor, even with the override switch depressed. The sled is stuck at the very forward position and I can't get to it. There is no way to move the sled back into the open to work on it.
I did call the dealer and they will eventually come out. But until that happens, anyone have any suggestions?

I have a 2015 35SC. I’m not sure if this will help but I had a similar issue kinda sorta like you mentioned. The sunroof for whatever reason got cocked out of alignment and the motor kept trying to retract it, eventually blowing the fuse. Since the fuse was blown, no motor noise, no forward/aft movement which is similar to your situation. I replaced the fuse and had to brute force the sunroof back into alignment. Just to clarify, the alignment was about 1/4-1/2” off center so it was more like a strong push to align it. Maybe check the fuses on the panel.

That may be part of the issue. The bigger problem is that it is a bad design to begin with. Rather than redesigning the assembly, Regal just said to keep the sunroof closed in rough weather. Not that I ever got that memo... Regal made a lot of design changes starting with the 2016 model year.
The mechanic from the dealer is coming out to look at it tomorrow. Faster than I thought.

? Who would keep sun roof open in bad/rough weather? Regal needs to resolve this!

? Who would keep sun roof open in bad/rough weather? Regal needs to resolve this! On many of my lake crossings, the sky has been sunny but the waves rough. With the sunroof closed, the boat gets very hot and stuffy. As it turned out, the dealer mechanic came out today and removed the entire motor/track/belt assembly. The belt was pinched, so it needs to be replaced. There is a newer, stronger belt available ($700). The sled assembly (or slider, as he called it), also needs to be replaced as the threads are stripped ($100). Once he has the parts from Regal he will reassemble the the belt/track assembly and bench test it. Hopefully won't take much more than a week or so.

Good to hear. On a different note and since we have the same boats, do you have any issues with your generator? I have a Kohler 5kw gen that refuses to start on the first try only. Once I reset the fault code it starts and runs without issue.

Once I reset the fault code it starts and runs without issue. The genny has never worked right. I have a dock neighbor with the 2016 35sc and he has the same genny and same issue. I flip the switch in the cabin. The genny runs for 13 seconds, then dies. I have to open up the engine room, clear the error on the panel, and restart it from there. *then* it runs right. Sound familiar? A local mechanic tells me that that the Kohler generator has firmware on it that looks for certain sensors that are not on this model generator, and that is why it acts so flakey. Regal stopped using this model generator in later years and switched to another one. I have invested in a second house battery and an inverter and a male-male cord I use to backfeed the power system from the cabin outlet. I use it only to run the TV, however. I looked long and hard for a 12v icemaker, but alas, it does not exist.

Regarding the genny… I have a 2016 sc35 and just last year i managed to have a dependable genny (kohler 7.5 kw) after kohler had the controller replaced with another one running firmware version 1.7 . (I had had 1.5 since new). Still Genny stops without error every now and then but it starts right away, without the need of resetting it. I know that some people had to install a Kohler remote gauge that allows to reset it without the need of getting into the ER.
I thought about doing the same but since i got the new firmware the genny runs great. (Its not perfect but i havent had to get into a Hot ER anymore .!!)

How did you get Kohler to replace the the controller? And who did you talk to? And what did it cost? I have a Model 5EKD.

Finally, someone else with the same problem! Not that I’m celebrating your misery either. It looks like I have 2 options. 1. Update the firmware to possibly fix the issue?
2. Install the Kohler remote gauge to allow a reset. Is it an app type thing or hard wiring?
Personally I’m voting for the remote reset gauge because twisting myself into that hot engine compartment…..sucks.
Any ideas on the costs of parts etc? Thanks all for replying to this thread. If I can get that remote installed that’s a game changer.

There is another type for different genny models. citimarinestore.com/en/kohler-marine-generators/6141-kohler-digital-gauge-3.html

If I can get that remote installed that’s a game changer. After a few phone calls to Kohler and their distributors, one of them sent me the firmware upgrade and instructions. The firmware goes on a USB stick and the controller should recognize it immediately. I am going to try it tonight on the boat and see if it works. Will post results tomorrow.

Here is the latest update on the generator: I installed s the firmware update with no issue. Turned on the genny from the remote switch. It ran for 16 seconds and stopped. The error was “check engine”. I cleared the error and re-started it from the switch again. No issue. Let it run for a few minutes and put a load on it. Turned it off at the switch, then turned it off at the controller. Let it sit for a few minutes, turned it back on at the panel then turned it on at the switch. No issue. Turned it off at the switch (but not on the controller) and let it sit for an hour. Turned it on again at the switch. No issue. I let it sit overnight. Next day, turn it on from the remote switch, it came on... and stayed on! Not sure I am ready to declare the problem solved, but for now it has stayed on 3 out of 4 times, so maybe the first time it fizzled was due to the fact it hadn't been run in two years. I have attached three files to this post: ADC2U184.bin (248 KB) - The firmware update itself (put it on a USB stick) ADVANCED DIGITAL CONTROL II.docx (12.74 KB) - Firmware release notes Kohler 5EKD maintenance manual tp6593.pdf (3.02 MB) - Generator maintenance manual (see page 45 for menu for the firmware update)

Glad its working better! Mine improved a lot with the newer sw version! As in your case a Kohler dealer replaced my controller but just because Kohler decided to cover it under warranty; otherwise the firmware version would have been enough.

Re previous posting = Why Kohler got out of gasoline powered gen set business about 6-8 years ago! Our 20 year old crazy expensive westerbeke with 1200 hours still starting/running like a sewing machine. Just a capacitor ( $600 repair but bought same capacitor for $18 and replaced) and sea water pump to date. Have seen so many problems with the Kohler gas units assume that is why Regal stopped using them along with most other yacht mfg's. ?
