I’m interested in getting everyone’s thoughts about a situation we are in. Our neighboring boat at the marina has now hit us twice while docking his boat and has done noticeable damage to my boat. In over 20 years of slipping my boats I’ve never had anyone hit me once, nor have I ever hit anything. I keep my boat in immaculate condition and I have been detailing my new 33 express every weekend. Twice now during that detailing process I’ve found nasty scratches in my gel coat above the rub rail. I haven’t actually seen him hit it but the scratches align with the rub rail of my neighbor. Also, his boat is very tough to handle and the times I’ve seen him dock have been erratic at best. I’ve decided not to confront him directly, as I believe he will immediately go into denial mode based on his personality. Instead we are going to the owners of the marina who also happen to be my Regal dealer.
What would you do in this situation?

Can set you htm fenders horizontally to offer possible protection? How about setting up a video camera? You can also just confront your neighbor in a non confessional way.
My other smaller boat was hit by my dock neighbors son. I didn’t see it but the damage and color of the scratches lined up with his boat. I said something to the dad and the son denied it. Not much you can do without proof.

That just sucks!
I was hanging out with other boat neighbors last night and many of them commented on this guys ability to dock his boat. No mention of him hitting anything but the posts, but that the post have had to be reset due to him hitting them so hard. I have never met him, but I understand he has quite the sense of humor and seems to be well liked. I would just try talking with him as I’m sure it would be pretty easy to prove the scratches came from his boat and I believe he knows he is not a great docker...

That’s just it, without proof, confronting him probably won’t accomplish anything. I may mention it to him but I don’t expect him to do anything for me. I’m going to get it fixed regardless, the main issue is I don’t want this boat docking next to me next season or at the very least I want more posts put in so he can’t hit me. I have nothing against him, he is a nice guy, but the boat is rough and he can’t handle it.

If it were me I would first talk to him nicely, then put a video camera on the slip (the motion actuated type) , then call the marina after getting video's of him hitting your boat. Ya, we have some folks on our dock but most, if not all, experienced in backing in their 40'+ vessels into their slips so cant complain about a similar incidence. How long is your slip and does dock mate have the rollers at the entrance to his slip to help guide him into his slip? Also, think about just moving to another slip on your dock or moving to another adjacent dock if this doesn't get resolved. Good luck and let us know what results are!

I have seen Him dock once while circling to get gas, pretty sure the fella is the culprit and I even commented to my wife on his docking. For the investment that you have and how particular you are...a couple of WiFi cameras from amazon will do the trick. A marina environment is tough as you have to stare at a guy for the whole season if you upset him...and knowing the guy from interacting with him slightly at the social events...he will deny. I know one thing for sure..,a scratch won’t come from you!

Rather than paying for a couple of cameras to record him/son hitting your boat just tell the marina management to move him or you to another slip or dock?

They won’t be able to move anyone yet, the marina is full and the season will be coming to an end in a month or so. They can either move him or add more poles between our boats, there is only one 6x6 post between us, 2 additional posts would be sufficient.

Tell marina that after winter pull out you want the first good slip available where offender is not anywhere close to your vessel. From experience, a lot of new boaters don't want to pull out but rather sell their boats ? Good luck and hope your winter over is mild! (We don't have to pull out here in the aTL area, lake never freezes ).

Update: I underestimated my dock neighbor. I saw him today for the first time since the most recent incident and he immediately admitted to hitting me and causing damage. I told him i appreciated his honesty. He says he will pay for any damage although I’m not looking for that, I just don’t want it to happen again. I haven’t been able to discuss with the marina owners yet to figure out a solution for next season.
