What is the optimal trim setting for Volvo Penta sterdrive? I use 0 but the salesman set it at -5 for our sea trial. What is the best setting and what differences effect boat performance or fuel consumption?

There is no optimal setting it changes constantly. Drive down to get on plan, then start easing it up a little , you'll notice an rpm change as well as a speed change. Run it where you comfortable but VP says don't go over 10% while running over 1000 rpm

It depends on the boat and the conditions. My 33 express cruises best at -5. If I ran at 0 my fuel mileage would be awful.

It sounds like you have Garmin and volvo EVC. if that's the case, you can program in "power trim assist" settings to auto trim for you. As others have said, start at max down -6/-5 whatever full down is, then as you get on plane above 20mph you can set the trim to gradually trim up to 0 or even +1 or +2 when going fast, like 35+. its a great feature so you don't have to be messing with the trim constantly.
