Second winter with a 2001 regal commodore 4160. The bottom paint is starting to fade quite a bit and I'm wondering at what point should I paint it, and what kind of paint should I use? I have no idea what the owner before me used. It's a black color and there's blotches of white I can see throughout the bottom. I know it's not a great photo but it's all I have at the moment. I was thinking about getting 3 gallons of this from Lowe's, not sure if that is enough? www.lowes.com/pd/TotalBoat-Spartan-Boat-Bottom-Antifouling-Paint-Flat-Black-Oil-based-Marine-Paint-1-Gallon/5014903251I appreciate any help! Thanks J

Hopefully you’ll get other responses here at some point? In the meantime run a Google search on the Hull Truth boating forum (with your search terms) - many postings about paint to use, proper prep, etc. BTW - generally you’ll want to match the new bottom paint type as closely as possible to what’s on there now for the best adhesion otherwise it’s about removing the old paint and applying the new stuff (with primer if required?)…
PS - Did you ask your marina for any advice?

I use Interlux Bottomkote NT. If you go to the Interlux website you can tailor your request based on boat material, is your boat in fresh, salt or brakish waters etc. The website will help you choose what is best for your application.

I think that paint condition looks OK, at least for another season. Generally I think you can go every other year with bottom paint, as a rule of thumb, if it is applied and prepped correctly. Some folks perhaps squeeze out three seasons out of a bottom paint -- it totally depends on condition. I last had my bottom painted the winter of 2022-2023, and when I hauled out in November 2023, I had a few thin spots where you could see slight white underneath the paint. But overall, the paint pretty much was still solid black on the bottom. I decided to go the 2024 boating season with the paint as it was, and will repaint this coming winter (2024-2025).
The key to a successful paint is all in the prep. I'd recommend a thorough pressure wash, and then a scuff of the old bottom paint with a sander to help maximize adhesion.
