Rich, agree, but If doing this It allows you to find the filter (plugged or not) then most likely you should just replace it, wet or not, especially if current filter is plugged and not allowing a easy pump out?

I'd also suggest to replace your vent line filter if you have one and haven't done it yet. You probably do have the filter. It's possible the tank was overflowed at one time and this can cause the vent filter to become clogged. It is possible to service these filters yourself and recharge them, but it's easier to just replace them with the newer versions. SandLapper started it, but Rich's post is what I needed to understand more about replacing the vent filter. Then tc33obx, later in this thread, helped me immediately locate it (same as was on his 4460) so this morning, I purchased a new one, replaced the old with the new in just a few mins, and went to the same pump out (at my marina) ... EXCELLENT! I pumped out just over half a tank of waste in probably under 4 minutes (I didn't time it, but it sure was much faster than me fighting it before, off and on, off and on, etc). You guys really ROCK! I greatly appreciate your shared expertise. I feel like I'm building familiarity with this [new to me] boat much faster thanks to you all!

It's good to know you solved this issue! I always appreciate when someone comes back and tells us the solution that helped them.
Also keep in mind, if you ever let the tank get "too full", it will probably get the filter wet and cause it to clog again. I've seen it happen when people are not paying attention to the level of their holding tank.

What Rick suggests is very important, I go in a habit of pumping out my holding tank almost every time I filled up or at least every time it got to 3/4s. I had no idea how good the gauge was, and I never wanted to run into what Rich explained on an overfilled tank.

I learned about not overfilling my tank early, and at a cost of a filter or two before I learned what was going on. What I learned, is that on my boat (3560) the holding tank level gauge is not linear. So what happens is by the time the gauge starts moving off empty, the tank is getting ready to be emptied. It tends to quickly go to 1/2 then 3/4 full on the gauge. If I don't empty it when it's at the 3/4 full mark, it will be probably be overfilled before I make it to pump out. I confirmed why when I removed the tank level sensor to check (and clean) it. The shape and size of the tank, along with how the sensor is mounted dictates this. The issues on my boat are compounded by the fact that I currently only have one holding tank (the original black water tank). And since I'm on a freshwater lake, here in NH, we also require all grey water to go into a tank, none can go overboard. So this means, every water drain from a sink goes into the holding tank. So every time you use fresh water, no matter why (except for the swim platform fresh water shower) ends up into the holding tank. Originally the grey water on the 3560 would drain overboard, so the holding tank is not very large as it was designed only as a black water holding tank. Additionally, the air-conditioning condensate drain was plumbed into the grey water pump, so this was also going into the holding tank. Since this is essentially distilled water, I later changed the condensate drain to go overboard, because it would fill the holding tank in almost no time during a humid period. I'm currently considering replacing my fresh water holding tank with one that is 1/2 the current size, and then using the space to add a separate grey water holding tank. But I'm not sure if I can easily remove the original tank, and get two smaller ones into the space without removing engines, etc. So this project may be on hold for a while, unless I want to go with soft sided tanks and cut out the original tank. Because of all this I tend to keep a close eye on the holding tank level and it gets pumped out every chance I get.

Here in GA our grey water can be pumped out directly, meaning sinks,showers, AC condensate, bilge pumps, etc. But obvious not black water tank. Yes, nice to hear about the resolution of your problem and advice to pump out way before gauge reads 1/2 or 3/4 full. What type toilet system do you have and do you wash greasy pans/pots in the galley sink that , in your case, would go to the black water tank?? If so, the grease from pot/pan washing could be restricting the float level sender in the black water tank?

On my boat, everything goes to the one (black water) holding tank. So this means all drains, sinks, shower, toilet (VacuFlush), etc. This was done because on Lake Winnipesaukee, they want to limit all waste water (grey or black) into the lake to preserve its water quality.
As I said, I did reroute the A/C condensate drain overboard. But basically everything that went to 'shower sump' was plumbed into the holding tank. This is why I want to consider replacing the large fresh water tank, with a smaller unit and add an additional grey water tank.
I think my current tanks are a 30 gal holding tank and a 70 gal fresh water tank. So I'd like to go to a 35 gal fresh water tank and add an additional 35 gal grey water tank, and then plumb the 'shower sump' into the grey water tank.
I don't spend overnights off the dock as it's not allowed in NH in inland waterways, so I don't need to hold 70 gals of fresh water, as we're back at my dock every night.

Thank you sir!! Have a 2006 4460....bought in the fall and could not imagine where the head vent filter was.... Quick comment or ask, the pump out port is in a horrible location under the rub rail, requiring me to lay on the walk around to pump out between boats. Any tricks, alternatives or re-works that you've heard of to relocate to a better location? Thanks !

I have the same issue, replaced the vent filter and still the issue persisted where I can’t pump out my tank . The dealers service dept if an absolute joke, they have no,idea so they need to call in an “expert” . Anybody know where the tank on a 2019 OBX is?
