I don't recall on my last boat, but with my 2007 4460, when I turn on the fresh water pump, I hear it prime (let's call that a growl), then it stops and all is well. However, at seemingly random intervals (definitely not consistent), that pump will growl again as if it's priming again (as if there is a loss of pressure in the lines). Of course it does this when we turn on a faucet to use, for example. However, this also happens without anyone using a fresh water item (faucet, toilet, etc). So, when we're sleeping at night, it runs and wakes the misses up. Thus, NOT GOOD! Is this normal behavior for a fresh water pump or am I right in suspecting that maybe I have a pressure leak somewhere in the system or something else?
If this is normal, it could be the original pump for all I know. I've looked online and found some "ultra quiet" fresh water pumps. Has anyone tried one of those and are they really ultra quiet?

If the pump kicks on when nothing should be drawing water there is a leak somewhere. Check all of your faucets, and your transom shower to make sure they are all off, then check at the pump itself. If that all checks out, then begin the painstaking process of locating the leak.

Keep in mind that the leak is probably in the place where the faucet connects to the feeder lines. I eventually replaced all the faucets and shower heads in my 4460 to put this issue permanently behind me. That wasn't a very hard job. I ended up used Grohe single pull faucets to replace the heads and a nice Grohe smaller kitchen faucet with pull out spray handle built within the faucet head. This wasn't a hard job on the sinks. However, with the shower head getting to the source feeder lines looked impossible without breaking mirrors or pulling interior panels down. So what I did was get a shut off valve that I could put in line with the shower handles and I could turn them completely off there. That stopped the dripping and kept me from having to dig deeper into panels on the showers.

Yes, as stated, you either have a small leak somewhere, or something is consuming some water.
If it's a leak, sometimes they are hard to find as most small drips or leaks head to the bilge and are never found.
On my boat, if I leave the ice maker on, and it decides to make a batch of ice in the middle of the night, I can hear the water pump kick on for a moment, similar to what you are saying.
I pay attention in to every sound on my boat, so I am also sensitive to things like this myself.

Rich mention Ice Maker......I once had a leak at the ice maker connection....I assumed it had froze during the winter and when the water system was turned on it had a very fine mist/drip leak that we could not see. occasionally the pump would kick on to bring water pressure up. I didn't find the leak until I did the fall clean up behind the garbage drop. I found some moisture and mold. Enough said.

All good advice other than the growl! That is a sign that the bearings of the fresh water pump bearings are going out! Happened to us twice, first time original 2001 pump in 2006, then cheep china made pump withing a year, then installed a shurflow 60 PSI pump, whisper quiet and running for 3 years or so now no problems. My thoughts= replace the pump with a good quality pump, SHURFLO AQUA KING™II SUPREME 5.0 MARINE FRESH WATER PUMP AFTERMARKET OEM P/N: 4158-153-E75 Purchased 6/7/2017 from Amazon. Sold by: FIVE OCEANS $245.24.
