580 Hours On VP I/O 300 HP gas Engines, in salt water but apparently clean? = www.yachtworld.com/boats/2012/regal-35-sport-coupe-3674450/Comments on price or what to watch out for? He is having a full survey per my recommendations. Will know about result of survey Thursday. Any insights would be helpful to him (me ) . PS: Gen listed Kohler 5EKD as 7.5 kW? Either not a 5 EKD or output listed is wrong? If he purchases it will have it trailers (shipped to our lake Lanier (GA). Dont have much confidence in the later years gen Kohler 3600 RPM two pole gen sets (noise and reliability?) Thanks

I own a 2016 That i purchased new; nothing specially bad to be aware of ; just normal things of any boat . With those hours i would have the engine and drives checked by a dependable mechanic and not just a surveyor. (Have the the engines and drives fluids analized/checked). I believe early Sc35 models had the 5kW Kohler but then 7kW model was the norm until Kohler ceased the manufacturing of gas units. Im afraid that the Genny has been the only major pain in the neck of all the boat systems, that particular EKD model is way too sensitive to everything in order to comply with safety laws. And as you suggested at 3600 rpms is noisier than Westernakes (ive been close to other Regal boats at anchor with Wb and the Wb is almost silent).
Just let me know in case your friend have any specific doubt about the boat or the genny. (Ive learned quite a bit about the Kohler in order to manage to live with it...).

Thanks, friend went to Wilmington NC Monday to be present for survey, haven't heard back from him yet. Good info on the Kohler Gas gens sets! Have to wonder why they backed out of the marine gas market, most likely warranty costs higher than profit on these poorly designed/tested/ manufactured sets . Westerbeke is still apparently in business with great sets but pricing for a quality/reliable set costs a ton of money? I would rather pay up front for a good reliable set than save a few hundred $ up front on a $350k+ vessel and regret it after Kohler set out of warranty? Stay safe!

I read on line that Wb sued Kohler about a proprietary patented tech they used in their gas units so they had to stop making them.
Honestly , i would only consider a Diesel boat just to avoid dealing with a gas genny. Vapor lock in south florida is a real nuisance and its not always possible to get free ethanol gas to minimize the problem.

Yes, I know about vapor lock on gasoline fueled engines. Out Westerbeke has something they call a fuel cooler connected to the sea water side of the cooling system. Really going full out design/engineering to prevent vapor lock on there great but expensive gas powered gen sets! Dont believe the ethanol content has much to do with vapor locking? Gasoline sold in the northern states has a winter and summer blend (the reid vapor pressure changes with seasons) so northern boats still having winter gas blend (high RVP) is subject to summer temperatures vapor locking in fuel systems when still on the "winter" blend fuel.If propulsion engines or gen set are fuel injected (our propulsion engines are, gen set not (carbureted) that posses much less of a problem as the fuel pressure required keeps gas pressurized and much less likely to "vapor lock.
