I have a 2015 35SC with a 5kw Kohler generator.
I’ve been having a continuous problem when starting the generator the first time only. The gen starts fine, normal crank up time, runs for 15-30 seconds and then shuts down, always with the same fault code:10.4 which I believe is an over voltage fault.
I clear the fault, re crank the gen and it works fine all day and it handles a full load. Next day….same problem. Drives me crazy. I do admit that I haven’t run the generator very much, it’s 6 years old with 12 hours on it. Now I try to run it everytime when I go to the boat just to keep it “exercised” from lack of use.
I’ve had the boat techs look at it (scratching heads) and even call Kohler 800 line with zero luck.
Any ideas?

I had posted last week that I had an issue with my 7.3 and water flow. While trying to figure it out, I was trying to start if, ran for 10 seconds and shutdown with same fault you indicate. I think my issue was that I didn’t turn off the generator breakers so it was trying to start under some load. Not sure if you have the same issue on the first start that there’s som load and the generator doesn’t have a chance to stabilize. Maybe on the second start it has overcome some of the normal startup sequence and can support some electrical demand?

I saw your post about your 7.3 gen. I’m usually really diligent about making sure all the circuit breakers and the generator switches are off prior to cranking the gen. I do however keep the shore power hooked up to the boat and it’s powered, but the main circuit breaker panel is off. Maybe the live shore power is doing something to cause the gen to shut down on the first crank.
I’ve come to terms with the problem and just resigned myself that I have to reset the fault and restart to have the gen run. Boats….gotta love’em.

Main breakers at AC panel should be left on shore power, turn on engine room blowers, then start gen, let run for 5 minutes or so, turn off all AC loads, then "transfer" from shore to gen circuits. Again, interesting, Kohler got out of the gasoline powered gen set business several years ago

Ok I’m going to try that. Going to the boat tomorrow, wish me luck. Thanks

Didn’t work. I left the main AC breaker on, fired up the gen and it quit after 15 secs. Re set the fault code and it worked fine.

My Kohler 7.5 ekd (sc35 2016) used to give me all kinds of random errors. at start up or it used to randomly stop without errors whatsoever until Kohler replaced the Control module with a new one running SW Version 1.7 (i used to have 1.5). I would ask a Kohler dealer to upgrade your Sw version if you are not running 1.7 .

Also, or Westerbeke 7.0 with 1200 hours never a problem, just change oil/filter, plugs, water pump impellor, great smooth running, quiet (no sound enclosure required) 1800 RPM internally counterbalanced set but no longer available
