When we get back to the boat after letting it sit for a few days closed up there is a foul smell in the cabin. It dissipates fairly quickly after we open the hatches and windows and let the breeze blow through.
At first I thought it was a sewage smell, but when I open the engine compartment (where the holding tank is) or the bathroom door, I don't smell it as strongly as I do in the cabin. Just in case I bought a new gasket for the head. Its the gasket that the "ball" part of the vacuflush seals against. Since the smell isn't as strong in the bathroom I doubt this will solve my problem. Also, last year I replaced the air filter on the waste storage tank.
I pulled up the mattress in the bow and removed the storage bins which allow me to look down into the forward storage area. I don't see any moisture or detect any smell. When I open the cabinet under the sink, I smell it pretty strongly. There is nothing in the cabinet that could be the cause of the smell. I even removed the drain hose from the sink to make sure there wasn't old food caught in the hose. Nothing there.
That cabinet is open along the back edge to the space behind the fridge. My next thought is to pull the fridge and continue following my nose.
1) Does anyone have any suggestions or ideas for further searching?
2) If I want to make sure its not something in the forward bilge where do I look? When I flip the forward bilge pump on, nothing spits out the side. I don't even know where the forward bilge pump is located...something I probably should figure out anyway. I'm wondering if I should flush the forward bilge with some fresh water just incase I'm smell some stagnant water somewhere.
3) Reading similar posts online, someone suggested making sure your waste vent line is not clogged. How do I check that?
Thanks for the help!
