I am trying to trouble shoot a temp gauge problem. the gauge varies from 80-175 degrees, it slowly climbs to 175 then drops quickly back to 80? on the thermostat housing there are 2 electrical sensors one has 2 wires the other has 1 wire. witch one runs the temp gauge and what does the other one do?

No clue, but disconnecting one or the other will certainly show up something.

Obviously the 175 makes sense. I would be surprised that the water gets back to 80’s so the idea it’s sender makes sense. I am more inclined to lean to gauges. If it drops and you tap it, and problem Goes away, it’s the gauge.
My guess is it’s the 2 wire sensor as most thermocouple devices are based of a current generated by 2 different metal alloys. I can’t think of anything working off one wire so now I am intrigued. Let us know

Most older engine I know of have single terminal switch). the switch either opens or closes on high coolant temp. sender just changes resistance to the temp gauge (just a voltmeter in disguise) most likely two terminal sender. Check for corroded wires/terminals and these units are cheep, buy one, replace, if not problem, buy second. Dont think bad gauge?
