Hey guys, new member here. We have a 2019 33 OBX and we love it. I want to upgrade the anchor line. We only have about 10 ft of chain and 80 ft of rope. What length can the anchor locker hold without it being an issue. Was thinking 40’ chain and 200’ of 8 plait rope.
thanks

200 ft of rode shouldn't be a problem but 40 ft of chain is a bit much, all you need to do is keep the anchor laying down on the bottom. 10 ft should be plenty under most situations

My 33 OBX has all chain at 150 feet. If you need more length I would go with some chain and the rest line. In my case, I never need more than 100 feet of anchor line and I'm a fan of using all chain with the anchor windless. On my 4460 we had about 25 feet of chain and the rest rode when we bought her and almost every time we pulled the anchor my wife would have an issue getting the chain to rode transition to go through the windlass. it would swell when in the water and never would feed through easily. I changed the 4460 over to 200 feet of chain and the boat rode better and the windlass was never an issue after that for whomever used it.

Only issue the the all chain on the 33 OBX is the windless James up and yiu have to manually assist by pulling it into the anchor locker

I've had it jam a few times and I just reverse it for a bit and then reverse it again and it normally clears. As long as you don't move the chain around in the hold with the anchor fully reeled it, is shouldn't get really stuck. For me I'm thrilled with chain in this respect as I had such and issue with the chain to line transition on my 4460 when the anchor was in the water for a while. The braid at the transition would swell and then it would jam at the roller when reeling it in. My wife couldn't clear it so I would have to and then scramble back to the helm since at that point we are pretty much off anchor.
The only other thing this causes is when it's windy the lack of flexibility in the chain when the wind pushes the boat to the end of the slack causes a pretty loud noise. I ended up going with some line with a connector attached to a link in the chain and then to the cleat next to the windlass to soften the crunch that happens when the chain slack is gathered up.
