I hope everyone is having a great summer season. I’m having a heck of a time figuring this one out.
We have a 2015 Regal 2300 with Volvo 5.7 L 300 HP Gi with DPS-B drive. It has an oil filter top right side as you face the engine that is a canister type with a lid that screws off to give access to a paper filter that is all that gets replaced. We had no issues with this the first few years we had the boat, and it had yearly oil changes, but last year we noted a small amount of oil in the bilge. I could not figure it out so a local marine shop identified a slow drip from the canister. They said the O ring for the lid was not on correctly and it had been allowing oil to drip. They changed the oil and filter and applied a new O ring. That was end of season, so we winterized and put her away and didn’t change the oil an additional time since then.
A few weeks ago we noticed that the bilge was filled with engine oil when doing our pre-launch engine bay check, and the dipstick was dry. I added enough oil to get her started, four quarts is what had drained, and we limped over to the ramp and pulled the boat out and dropped it at the marine mechanic. I didn’t think to observe while running as I was nervous about the engine running dry and contamination, but the mechanic said he was able to see oil dripping/running out of the junction where the lid and canister meet. Same place that had leaked last season. I let him know that he was the last one to change the oil so I would assume that the seal had been placed correctly. I’m pretty sure I’d been doing it properly in years prior too, but I’m always willing to take the blame if something I did fails.
I don’t understand this. The first four years we ran the boat, no issues, plenty of oil changes. Now all of a sudden, we’ve lost weeks on the water two seasons in a row due to this issue. I wish it would take a regular metal oil filter, but it doesn’t. When I’ve changed the oil, I’ve been careful to lubricate the O ring and place it where the old one was, and I’ve checked to be sure the old one isn’t still in place. We’ve been using OEM filters rather than aftermarket. I’m just at a loss and now I can’t take my eyes off the oil pressure gauge due to being paranoid that we will be stuck miles from our marina.
Any thoughts? I really appreciate any input.
