Greetings everyone, haven't been here for awhile. I'm trying to set the timing on the VP 5.7 Gi in my 96 Ventura. I have the timing shunt that everyone tells me I need but when I plug it into the distributor the engine doesn't start. Is that not the right procedure for this engine? It's a GM distributor like most everything else on the engine. If I put the timing light on it and just set it to 8 degrees it seems to run ok but it's been my understanding that with any distributor that has electronic advance, the electronic advance has to be disabled to set base timing. Thanks in advance for any assistance !!

In case it helps someone else .... I bought a subscription to the Haynes manual for that vintage VP engines and they actually went into timing procedures. You just jump the black and black/white wires in the dlc and set base timing to 8 degrees.
