I get an engine overheat alarm on my generator (Koehler 7.3kw, gas). There was a plugged ports where the seawater mixes with exhaust. That was fixed and now good flow of water in the exhaust. The shop wants to swap out the thermostat but how can I tell if it’s the thermostat of the closed loop water pump. I don’t want to pay for parts swappers.

Two things to maybe check. The first being your coolant tank on the left hand side of the generator, making sure its full. The second being to make sure you don't have an air bubble in your cooling system. If you remove the top of the sound shield, you'll see a bolt in the middle of the top. Run the generator to temp and then crack open that bolt to purge out any air.

Assume you dont have a coolant water temp gauge? If you do, what does it read when fully warmed up? Also, heat exchanger may be partially plugged? Changing thermostat shouldnt be very expensive, let them change it and if that doesnt fix the overheat alarm ask for refund on the labor !

The boat was initially in Charleston so salty water. The exhaust elbow had sediment. Needed full clean, that got water flowing into exhaust. I don’t have coolant temp gauge, but coolant was steaming out of the heat exchanger cap. Root problem seems to be a failed thermostat. Marina fixed on weekend. I think bigger problem was I wasn’t running regularly which isn’t good for any motor.
