Out for a cruise in my new (to me) 2010 Regal 2860 Window Express. Cruising at 3,000 RPM for about 1/2 hour when the Starboard Engine alarm sounded. Temp gauge pegged. I know for sure the temp was normal 10 minutes before. I turned engine off immediately. When I opened the bilge hatch, I could see small whiffs of smoke coming off the engine like it was very hot. Had to limp home on Port engine and no power steering, which was not fun trying to dock. Thank goodness seas were calm as glass and no wind.
I have a mechanic coming Next Sunday to look at it. Any theories as to what it might be other than a water pump?

2.3? Did you mean 4.3? Very likely, and you'd be lucky if, it's a stuck thermostat. Is this, per chance, a salt water boat? Could be corroded risers if original.

If your boat is sea water cooled it could be the impeller on that engine. It normally goes over time, but it could go that quickly if something got caught in it. If your engine is a closed system and has antifreeze in it and gets cooled by a seawater interchange system, then it could be the thermostat or if the sea water stopped flowing due to the same type of impeller fail, it could be that. I would think it's probably the impeller more than likely.

It ended up being the water pump. It seized up and sheered right off of the pulley. Was sitting in the bilge leaking water and I had to string it up with wire to get it above the waterline while the pumps were on order. Thanks for the replies.

I'm glad you figured it out.
