I trying to determine if I should do anything, and what that would be, in the way of lightning protection for the boat when it is up on my lift. Sticking up on the lift the boat is the highest electrically conducting object for 100’ and I wonder if that would attract lightning. Should I have a lightning rod on the lift to discharge lightning? To date, the only suggestion I get is to make sure my insurance is paid up. One source felt that a nearby lightning strike is as harmful as a direct strike so a lightning rod would work against me. Also of concern would be a lightning strike or power surge getting onto the boat through the shore power line. Any thoughts or experience?
It also makes one wonder what to do when out on the water in lightning. Should I just lay to near a sailboat?

If you havn't resolved this yet you might consider a grounding plate under water on the hull (professionally installed so electronics are grouded to the plate). For the lift, the manufacturer and installer undoubedly grounded the power line, any qualified electrition can check that. As far as grounding the boat while aloft you can add a chain or cable to ground. Best to have someone with experience locate the correct point from the boat and the ground stake.
